Passion Cycle Wissington, Suffolk (‡St.Edmundsbury & Ipswich) C.13

Photo:T.Marshall Passion Cycle, Wissington [188KB] Most of what remains of this battered Cycle is above, with the Last Supper just off-centre and Christ Washing his Disciples’ Feet (right, beyond the spiral patterned vertical divider). The remains of the Entry into Jerusalem are at the extreme left and there is Scrollwork ornament in bands above and below.
The cycle was originally complete up to the Resurrection, and although none of the three scenes is exactly clear, I have included a photograph of the cycle anyway. Elegant scrollwork bands dividing the scenes horizontally show well; these, like the narrative subjects, are painted in red ochre.

There are other paintings in the church; Two Miracles of St. Nicholas is newly on the site, along with St. Michael Weighing Souls, the Nativity/Annunciation to the Shepherds, (showing the Virgin in bed), an Adoration/Dream of the Magi, (with the Magi in bed) and a very uncommon scene of St. Francis preaching to the Birds - possibly the earliest painting of this subject in England.
